On Thursday, 8 May, Professor Georgina Hold and Dr Paris Tavakoli from the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC) participated in the Gut Feelings: Crafting Wellness event, hosted by the Gut Feelings Community at Darling Square Library.
This initiative brought together art and science through a unique collaboration with the Neural Knitwork artists—Pat Pillai, Rita Pearce, and Mary Hayman—who use textile-based art to creatively explore and promote awareness around gut health, mental health, and overall well-being.
The Gut Feelings Community Art Project invites participants of all backgrounds to contribute handmade textile representations of microbes, gut cells, and intestinal villi. These contributions will become part of a large-scale, immersive installation featuring elements such as oversized microbes, a woollen cross-section of the gut, or potentially even a walk-in intestinal model.
The event was designed to achieve the following objectives:
- Facilitate a full day of collaborative crafting, contributing to a final collective artwork
- Provide attendees with insights from leading gut microbiome researchers
- Foster interaction between participants, researchers, and artists in an inclusive and engaging environment
- Supply all necessary materials, while also welcoming personal contributions
