MRC Director Engages in International Microbiome Collaboration in India AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad
Professor Emad El-Omar, Director of the UNSW Microbiome Research Centre (MRC), visited AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad, in January 2026 to engage with colleagues at the launch of the Centre for Microbiome Research India at the Gachibowli campus.
The Centre was formally inaugurated on 15 January 2026 and represents a significant international investment in microbiome science and translational gastroenterology, with a focus on personalised microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics for chronic gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases.
During his visit, Professor El-Omar participated in discussions with clinical and research leaders on advancing microbiome-informed approaches to conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, fatty liver disease, obesity and pancreatitis, and on the integration of advanced sequencing, bioinformatics and clinical translation within hospital-based research settings.
The visit reflects the MRC’s commitment to international collaboration and global leadership in microbiome research, supporting the translation of discovery science into clinical impact across diverse health systems.
