Professor Emad El-Omar, Director of the Microbiome Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, recently chaired the microbiome session at Asian Pacific Digestive Week 2025 in Singapore. He also delivered a state-of-the-art lecture entitled “Gastrointestinal Disease and the Gut Microbiome – Current Status and Future Directions”.
In his lecture, Professor El-Omar explored the evolving landscape of the gut microbiome and its profound implications for gastrointestinal disease. He discussed how advances in multi-omics, host-microbiome immune interactions and microbiome-based therapeutics are reshaping clinical practice. Emphasising translational opportunities, he charted key research gaps and looked ahead to how microbial biomarkers and personalised microbiome interventions may transform disease management in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
