Today (23 June 2025) we welcomed Dr Michael Holland MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Regional Health and Member for Bega, to the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC) at St George Hospital.
Dr Holland toured the MRC with Professor Georgina Hold, Associate Professor Amany Zekry and Dr Fatima El-Assaad, joined by Pamela Brown, SSMRF CEO.
The MRC is Australia’s first research centre dedicated to exploring how the microbiota (the trillions of microbes living in and on us) affect health and disease.
Since its establishment in 2017 with a federal grant awarded to the SSMRF, the MRC has grown into a powerhouse of discovery, now leading 127 research projects, including 28 international collaborations with world-class hospitals, universities and institutes.
Their research addresses Australia’s most significant health challenges, including cancer, heart disease, mental health and diabetes, with a clear goal: to transform lives through science.
